too much hype - it is just another disease

not a complicated disease
exercise the answer
monitor blood glucose regularly
periodic medical check
domestic work out must
wasim akram was a type 1 diabetic

diabetes mellitus is not a disease

Diabetes mellitus is not a disease. it is a disease state

there are individuals who are diabetes prone and who are not.

to make the understanding simple there are individuals who succumb to asthmatic attacks and are asthmatics prone . diabetes mellitus is like bronchial asthma.

What causes diabetes?

  • diabetes is high blood sugar.
  • this can be caused by absence of insulin -or insufficient insulin
  • or insulin may not sensitise enough.
  • since insulin is a hormone the hormones activates receptors and if this does not happen it means they are not sensitised.
  • genetic factors play a role and it is inherited by genes.

Types of diabetes

previously it was called insulin dependent and non insulin dependent. but now WHO has classified it into

type 1- where insulin should be given ready made because there is lack of insulin

type 2 - where the deficiency is supplemented.

type 2 is alos called maturity onset because it occurs after 40 years of age

but nowadays there is a subtype called MODY which is MATURITY ONSET OF DIABETES IN YOUNG AGE MEANS 33 ONWARDS

it is perhaps MODY which is the alarming trend in the diabetes picture . this happens because of

  • junk food
  • lack of proper diet
  • sedentary life habits
  • TV
  • Internet
  • lack of exercise
  • lack of proper sleep patterns
  • stress
  • exertion

so altering all these is called lifestyle modification which is the principal factor which controls diabetes

Factors determining diabetes diabetes state

genes and autoimmunity

the type is due to genes invariably and there is an auto immunity component . so if the body's defence mechanism is strengthened and if stress is alleviated and if the body's reserve energy stores are not depleted then diabetes can be under check

Rice and polished rice,

THE OUTER BRAN OF RICE HAS SUGAR REDUCING PROPERTIES AND THE POLISHED RICE DUE TO INDUSTRIALISATION HAS BEEN IMPLICATED TO HIKE BLOOD SUGAR.

FERTILISERS AND UREA ARE SUSPECTED TO CAUSE CHANGES IN HORMONE CASCADE ACTIVATION

PANCREATIC EXHAUTION AND PANCREATIC DEHYDRATION may cause diabetes

MYTHS

  1. EATING SWEETS DO NOT CAUSE DIABETES
  2. EATING CHOCOLATES DO NOT CAUSE DIABETES
  3. rice eaters are prone
  4. BUT IF THERE IS DIABETES EATING SWEETS SHOULD BE AVOIDED.
  5. fat and obese are prone

How to control- the tests

screening by blood sugar

  • if elevated random sugar go for fasting and postprandial sugar check before and after food
  • if elevated find-out whether impaired by GTT glucose tolerance test
  • this will confirm whether diabetes is there are not

once diabetes is confirmed periodically do the following

  1. urine check for sugar- twice weekly
  2. blood sugar- fortnightly
  3. HBA1C- or glycosylated haemoglobin- once in three months

Complications

  • micro-vascular and macrovascular complications are numerous
  • contrary to fears a tight control do not allow the disease to progress
  • do not worry about the complications , worry about control.

What Allopathy says about diabetes

  • focus is on preventing complications because patients now present with advanced or full fledged disease
  • in a developed world or screening is focused
  • insulin bovine is replaced by humulin
  • pharma industry has a field day in recombinant DNA technology
  • the pharma industry is responsible for creating fears in-order to market various diabetes products
  • inhalation version of insulin will soon hit the market and then diabetes will become like asthma

What Ayurveda says

  • diabetes is not a disease of the individual. it is a disease of the society
  • there is answer in herbs
  • fenugreek
  • bitter-gourd has sugar reducing properties
  • indian jamoon seeds have sugar reducing properties
  • yoga can control stress

What Siddha says

  • lead a simple life
  • be active
  • the diet is the drug for diabetes
  • whatever is bitter is the antidote for diabetes-neem,bittergourd,fenugreek etc.,

Treatment and cure

there is no cure for diabetes . it can only be controlled. it is like asthma. it is a hormone related disease. so we need to strengthen immunity. at present we do not have potential immunostimulant

When the parents have diabetes

  • carry out life style modification and avoid what is listed for causative factors of MODY
  • all work and no play makes jack a diabetic
  • play, engage in outdoor activities, walk, run, jog, cycle, trek etc.,
  • take days off
  • have a vacation
  • de stress with yoga

When the sugar is impaired

  • exercise
  • lifestyle modification
  • strict diet regimen
  • no fasting and feasting(party)

When the sugar is elevated

  • doctor visit
  • drugs
  • exercise
  • drugs
  • diet
  • meals in time
  • sleep in time
  • regulate work schedule

Diet regimen in diabetes

AVOID SUGAR,HONEY,PASTRY,ICECREAM,CHOCOLATES

eat in time

avoid carbohydrates(potato,roots,tubers)

minimise rice

avoid polished rice

whole wheat

brown bread preferred

avoid fried food

avoid junk food

encourage bland boiled food

boiled vegetables

drink lots of soup

egg white

avoid coffee

green tea can be taken

red meat needs to be minimised

avoid fat

FRUITS CAN BE CONSUMED MORE AS FRUITS THAN AS JUICE BECAUSE THE FIBRE HAS SUGAR REDUCING PROPERTIES

fruits to be avoided-mango,jackfruit,banana,plantain,grapes,dry fruits,chiku

fruits allowed-apple, orange,mozambi,papaya,muskmelon,pears,

in moderate quantities-pomegranate,guava(contains fructose)

Insulin theraphy

  • only when sugar goes out of bounds
  • bouts of hypoglycaemia common
  • always carry chocolates

since this topic is about control will publish a hub separately for insulin.

ROLE OF ISLET CELL TRANSPLANTATION

i have personally carried out research and carried out islet cell transplantation and have metaanlysed with centres who performed numbers of islet cell transplantation .

the answer is selective and measured success only

Is stem cell promising?

i have included myself in a study - purely research and experimental and have found that injecting stem cells in the pancreas or nearby vessels do not help though commercial diktat is different.

however now i have modified my strategy and am on a another research methodology which is pending approval-from our ethics committee so i cannot publish the observations

Other types of diabetes

stress induced diabetes

gestational diabetes

surgical diabetes

Concluding note

the above hub is my own and authentic (and anyone has the liberty to differ from my views ) which is a standardised and accepted in our medical profession

for easy understanding i have published it in layman terms to create awareness

thanks for patient reading.please give me your valuable inputs so that i can receive feedback regarding public perception of the disease state

Well,I have a question about the Hormone casade activation...what does that mean??? I have never had any hormones given to me when going trough the change of life...but obviously they have changed/ and so has my diabetes..I do not have a bad case of it..just a long lasting insulin shot everyday is keeping it under control

I however exercise dailey, and watch my sugar intake and eat on a regular basis..well most of the time. Have been working on the stress level...taking care of my 88 yrs. old mom..who I have  now placed into a home..as she has Alz. big time.

What I hear you say is control, stress less, eat right, and don't worry will help me?  Love your hubs  G-Ma :o) hugs

WOW! We need more hubs like this! American doctors could learn from this if they were not so arrogant. We have a very expensive health care system, and everyone is still sick, but that is because there is plenty of money to be gained from sick people.

thanks magnoliazz for the wonderful feedback.

perhaps it is the industry which is dominating the health scenario now and treating diseases. they are not treating patients.

we got to get over it.

that is my primary motive as a doctor.

i am writing here not for commercial gains but for farreaching consequences only. may be people like you should guide me to do it better to reach the compu illiterate masses .

thanks a lot
